The headline of the story is just a tich misleading. According to the quotes in the story he said the three wise men portion could be just a legend, not the “Nativity” itself.
The “final blow” portion about his birth not being in December is not the least bit shocking or controversial, is it? Most people use the “shepherds in the fields” part of the Gospels to prove this point. The sheep were generally kept indoors from November to March according to some people who know more than me (I think).
All that said… I get your point.

You're right there isn't a lot of scandalous substance in the Evening Standard piece, but it annoys me anyway. The one statement attributed to the good Bishop
that "...there was little evidence that the Magi even existed..." is the glaring exception, I suppose.
Yeah, I double posted that one.
I understand your point in the original post and the comment. I can't stand shoddy, sensational journalism, and that is just what the headline for that article was. Even though it may have captured the disturbing views of the man, the headline should have said "Magi" instead of "Nativity".
As for the state of Christianity in Europe, great points. I have been in Berlin twice for a week (2001 and 2002) and while I love Berlin, the dearth of Christian spiritual life hangs in the air like smog.
